Not sure how much interest there is in this topic, but here it goes. If you want to get dress shoes, my STRONG recommendation is to make sure they're Goodyear-welted. The short version is these kinds of shoes will last a lifetime. You DO NOT throw them away. They're made of high quality leather, and the soles can be replaced by a cobbler. I think the best starter shoes would be Allen Edmonds. Look for Park Ave which is fairly neutral. Brand new, you can find them under $200 when they're on sale. If you're OK with buying used, you can find them under $100. This might seem a little steep, but remember, they last a lifetime. :) If you have questions about other brands or want other recs, let me know -- I love riffing about this stuff. https://allenemonds.com

I'm an Alden guy, Shell cordovan or black loafers. Sadly these are 2x the price I paid for them.

Those are absolutely gorgeous man. Alden is the better shoe…cost a bit more, haha I love the shell cordovan look but I never could get them to work for my feet, no matter how much brushing and crème I used. I ended up giving up and selling them all…except, I still kept this pair of vintage Florsheim. I had my cobbler friend replace the soles…unfortunately he did too good of a job, that I haven’t ever worn them. 🤣 They’re more like an art piece now.
