No one at any level of public office will ever pass an austerity agenda and stay in office.  

Who knows?  Maybe Congress will address Social security by 2035 so SSA payments don’t have to drop to 83%.  Some financial analysts say they can change the formulas for determining SSA payments.  Maybe they also make it so our children will have to work until 72 to get “full benefits” - whatever “full” will mean in the future.  

Without more meaningful fiscal policy changes, we will inexorably continue to do what we do best:

Consume.  Spend beyond our means.  Increase credit card debt beyond the trillion dollars it is now.

And our children and theirs will be singing Don McLean’s lament about the day the music died.
