Art I mean consider the context Crusoe is fantasy Thoreau was alone but also supported by community. Lived on his bros property. Close to town. Semi artificial retreat Kerouac i learned went into the woods truly alone and was already dealing with alcoholism and spiritual crisis at onset of his solitude. It amplified all his issues

in 1492, the discoverers came on three quite small rickety boats with no bathrooms (had to hang off the lines to empty their bowels in the wind, iirc) in 1620, the Mayflower set out as 2 ships for Virginia, wound up as 1 ship in Mass in 1845, Thoreau went to the woods because he wished to live deliberately...
