Curious on where you are on the don’t-work-for-free counter? Like, Octant picks a set of folks after an open call for interest (not a contest of real designs) and pay them for submitting, then pay more for the one they go with Doesn’t help folks just starting design careers but there’s Fiver et al. for that? Designers have been facing this dilemma for a long time ofc

Dont have any formed thoughts about design work in particular, as I don’t have any first hand experience as a designer, and i dont want to put my foot in my mouth. But can share some general thoughts about “dont work for free”. When I started my consulting business for example, I did all kinds of “work” for free to win the trust of clients and get a contract signed. I saw it as part of the sales cycle. If you are selling your own services, you need customers who want to purchase your work, and business transactions still require alot of trust. Contests and such could be good opportunities for people to expand their network, make connections, get a gig. I don’t see them as a good source for reliable income for an experienced service provider. Do you have strong opinions on this topic? Is your background in design? Hope I understood your question correctly
