I feel your frustration. The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. 

This is the nature of participating in a permissionless protocol where everything is public by default. The clients/apps are also positioning themselves as a casino business, so can’t depend on them to stop the nonsense. It’s also just crypto/degen culture in general.

thanks for the kind response and i haven’t taken a close look but i would bet the contract doesn’t allow direct creation of clankers and they have to go thru a central server, this is how most launchers work — so no, its not technically permissionless, they choose what they allow

It all depends on what the priorities are. There’s a version where both Clanker and Merkle require users to verify certain info before the tokens they launch are shown in the centralized frontends

I meant that anyone can observe what we are up to on here and launch a fake token somewhere. 

But I agree with you. I don’t buy most of the narratives being sold around here. I don’t even think the protocol is actually sufficiently decentralized or permissionless. I’ve burned lots of social capital yelling about this on Farcaster
