He had had a chronic nasal infection a few years and it was incurable. It wasn't terminal but between that and just being old he didn't seem to be extremely happy a lot of the time anymore. He used to love going outside on the deck and no longer wanted to do that and was spending more and more time in his little box. He also had been slowly losing weight and had gotten pretty skinny. All this combined and it just felt like time to let him go.
