I want to like science fiction, but I have 2 issues with most science fiction: 1. Sci-fi movies have spoiled my with the vivid and amazing scenes. My imagination just isn't that good. I had a hard time visualizing some of these worlds. 2. Character development is often pretty weak. I need characters with real depth and maybe even a sense of humor. Any recommendations there? Haven't found a good one in a long time.

This sounds familiar but the best science fiction I’ve ever read was by Connie Willis. Haven’t read her in years because I kind of gave up on the genre, but I’d definitely try reading her again.

Martian was maybe best thing recently but that was like 12 years ago. I may try Solaris. Sounds like my style. Psychological. I like Roadside Picnic OK. May look for a good spy novel, but so much slop in that genre and not one I frequent. Read Shibumi a few years ago and that was epic.

Martian was ok but the writing was hack. Luckily the science and story was solid or it would have fallen to pieces.
