wasn't this (or sth really close to it) in effect like for a decade now? Heard stories of people being denied entry if their phone did not have any social media on it (people used to get a new phone just for the purposes of travel to the states, and keep it free of social media for this exact reason) or if people would not give their unlocked phone to TSA...

Yup, it's (mostly) the previous version of this administration. quick google-fu found this: https://techcrunch.com/2019/08/27/border-deny-entry-united-states-social-media/ https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49493886 Other (random) sites as well (I'm not gonna comment on the validity of the source, as I don't have time for cross checking now, but plenty of sites have copy pasted the basic info from the first and second source). Most important parts (IMO): "In June, the US Department of State said nearly all applicants for US visas would have to submit their social media details under newly adopted rules. It said travellers would have to submit social media names and five years' worth of email addresses and phone numbers (THIS PART IS HORRIFYING TO ME). The administration of President Donald Trump first proposed the rules in March 2018. " "The new social media rules were published in the Federal Register in March 2018. Only applicants for certain diplomatic and official visa types are exempt from the new social identifier requirements. Previously, only a small number of visa applicants who were singled out for additional inspection were required to submit their social media, email and phone number history." There was a 2012 incident as well (so tbf, not solely related to this administration). https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2012/01/30/146092724/lost-in-translation-because-of-twitter-joke-brits-denied-entry-to-u-s Point still stands: this didn't start happening now. It's increased, but not new.

I admit I do not have receipts, it's hearsay and reddits talk that may or may not be false. Don't get me wrong, this is not a dig on you saying it was this administration (bcs it could be, just the 2016-2020 version of this administration), I'm just saying...
