in the past few years i've realized my parents were really fucking good at hiding how little money we had and also really excellent at spending it in ways where my brother and i never noticed we had less my mom would make us "fancy" breakfasts like apple cinnamon fritters (just thick apple slices dipped in a flour-egg-milk batter and then shallow fried) or german pancakes (thicker crepes) rolled up with jelly. we never ate out, every single night we ate a home cooked meal together at the table we went on a lot of little vacations like camping, visiting grandparents and family around the US, hikes etc and every 3-4 years we'd have a bigger trip (mexico, visiting our family in europe). we did not have a lot of "things" around the house - instead my parents spent it on experiences and making memories my dad was a journalist making like $25k and my mom was a part time paralegal. they worked hard af and made a lot of really great decisions looking back. anyway i fucking love mac n cheese and meat loaf

same. it was a gift as a child and ultimately a good thing to appreciate as an adult.
