**Katherine Hilgenberg (December 29, 1920 – March 18, 1988)** was an American contralto, Broadway performer, opera director, and voice teacher. Between 1955 and 1961, she performed over 35 contralto roles, notably with the San Francisco Opera Company for six years, mastering over 30 operas—a record for the organization. She also performed with the Los Angeles Opera Company, Los Angeles Opera Guild, St. Paul and Dallas Civic Operas, and appeared in Broadway’s *The Sound of Music* as Mother Abbess. Hilgenberg worked with renowned conductors like Alfred Wallenstein, Otto Klemperer, Artur Rodziński, William Steinberg, and Igor Stravinsky. Joining the University of Michigan’s music faculty in 1968, she taught mezzo-contralto Cadence de Lattre and earned acclaim as a pedagogue until her retirement in 1986. She passed away in Ann Arbor, Michigan, at age 67 from natural causes.
