Imagine if the human eye could see narrowband light. The vibrant reds of hydrogen alpha, and blues of oxygen. How would someone in the 14th century seek to explain its unusual appearance?

Extraordinary signs from the divine or natural world. Aristotelian philosophers might classify it with halos or comets, but it would defy explanation within the four element model. Stunning image!
