My personal interpretation, after much research, is that Judy represents the television era and the television audience. Started just after the atom Bomb. Was dying in 2017, pretty much dead now. To prevent Laura's death was to kill the original show, so the timelines get all out of whack so that then there was just a vague memory of the original show. Dale becomes Richard, and he and Carrie are lost...
