This week Omarchy got support for pre-M series Macbooks plus ghostty and Brave auto theming. I still think this project is net good for Linux and open source adoption.

I’ve been eyeing old thinkpads. Can get great ones for a couple hundred buck.

I remember seeing your post a couple weeks ago. I’m tempted 😂 I have a think pad I use as an air gapped device but as someone who doesn’t own a laptop may need to get one

They’re just such a great value. Companies buy tons of powerful, serviceable laptops, and then decommission them in waves. Very Linux friendly, usually upgradable. And personally I like the aesthetic. For a higher budget, the newer models with AMD Ryzen are very Linux friendly.

I have the opposite issue as you. I have an M2 MacBook that I use for graphic design work, so it’s pretty hard to justify downgrading just cause I love Linux.

I can see that. I’ve debated getting a laptop. My most recent trip I needed to edit a podcast and it was a struggle on the phone (couldn’t do it). I do some light video work so the MacBooks seem like the natural fit but man it’s brutal at their price point. I have a beefy desktop at home 🤷‍♂️ will see where I land

If you use DaVinci or can get accustomed to KdenLive, you can video edit on Linux. And for light photo editing GiMP works. Krita is fantastic for illustrators and Blender for 3D. But there’s no good alternatives to the Adobe CC or Affinity core trilogy of super interoperable Photo, Vector, Layout that you get with PS, Illustrators, InDesign for example. I’d be doubling my workflow time for effectively no reason.
