One of the really sad things about getting older and watching current events is that you come to realize that things won’t improve in your lifetime. All of the dreams of a better, fairer world you’ve had for years don’t have enough time to come to pass before your time is up.

This has me melancholy today.

Glad to hear it. Youthful idealism may die a hard and painful death, and that's a necessary loss of aging... but still, that's not all there is to the story. 

Maybe there are "consolation prizes" (or something like that) for the loss of youthful idealism.
