/synbio is super underrated Dan’s post refers to an example of the 1st successful pig to human kidney transplant Some small caveats + key words: * xenotransplant = organ transplant from non-human animal This was a huge feat for xenotransplants, but this patient lived for 50 days and died from a potentially unrelated heart attack The only other cases of xenotransplant patients survived for max 2 months. We need more longitudinal studies of course, but this is still massive progress that scientists can genetically engineer another animal’s organ to be compatible in humans for any amount of time. "He immediately stopped needing dialysis." Because he died quite soon after 😬 tbf it seems the 50ish days of life he had following this procedure were with a functional heavily gene-edited kidney, although it also seems the authors are open to the possibility that it also caused his death. "we cannot exclude the possibility that frequent fluctuations in intravascular volume, possibly caused by a dysfunctional RAAS in the pig kidney, may have increased the risk of cardiac dysrhythmia"
