I would think that what they're really after right now is (i) understanding of language and (ii) models for 3d avatars as shown in the Lex Friedman interview. Ultimately you want to be able to take a few pictures on your cell phone and turn that into a life-like avatar in VR.

What’s Meta using it for? As in that scale?

google has their own TPUs, IDK how many, but they could be on equal grounds in terms of compute power and superior on price/performance.
