The question of why he was so committed to preserving (and changing) the Union rather than letting the split happen and starting anew is probably the deepest question about the most fascinating statesman I know about. Id love to do a half year exploration of this question w friends at some point

This is true but so is your counterpoint in the OP — that sometimes the only move is to start fresh Id bet is always an act of practical judgment abt which way is right in a certain circumstance
