Definitely, but in the isolated space of farcaster for the most part 

Have heard of the negative impact it had on general artistic reputation from collectors who felt the work had become devalued (not that I agree with the sentiment, as I think mass production is essential for larger awareness)

Free mint meta favored artists who used technology/blockchain as a medium more than artists who simply wanted to tokenize their work in a global digital marketplace

This is why I think the free mint meta helped shift NFTs to a declined phase 

For art at least, I think content is a different story and benefits from micro transactions

Your personal bias is entering this argument. You understand the value of blockchain and have money and it easy for you. You’re like the 0.000000001% in the world. 

Most people, I’d even say like 99%, don’t care about security or blockchain or anything and they just want to use an app to post stuff. Asking those people to pay to use a nerd Twitter with no news or content is never going to work. It won’t just magically start working one day. Even reducing the cost to 1 penny or giving out invites still won’t work. It’s a principle concept. 

The real issue is bots / spam imo. They don’t have another solution to stop bots so it will always have to cost money. I doubt Merkle is choosing to gate signups.

If you pay for something, your expectations are higher

The opposite is true for the cost of signing up to a social app

You’re completely right, even discounts to get new customers in can put you in a bad spot. A lot of people just use deals and never do recurring business.

When I was getting into product management, I saw a lot of courses that were free and I used them but now most of them are paid. Apparently people just took those courses for granted and are now trying to get them because they feel like there is a elite knowledge in them
