I had recurring nightmares about this exact scenario when I was a teenager, decades ago. Weird.

That’s where we’re headed. Fall of civilization accord every few centuries, my bet is we’re closer and closer.

I was taking a web design class and learned HTML. At first just rolling with raw notepad, then teacher shows us a fancy app that color codes and preformats your code to make it easier. Then I found a web site builder that let you just drag and drop stuff into a page without any code… and I saw this sequence all in the span of a week, and had an epiphany. At some point in the future, nobody would know how to code things the hard way anymore. Our society was already getting exponentially more digital, and I could see a day when critical human systems had deep coded faults, and society would collapse for lack of anyone with the experience to solve it. Had nightmares about it on and off for years.

I didn’t predict AI of course, that’s an accelerant to this problem for sure.
