The price of a crypto asset matters if you own it already. 

It doesn't matter if you don't own it. It's downstream of market cap.

Hypothetical (unlikely to happen) -- Bitcoin does a 2:1 stock split. There are now 42 million BTC. Everyone 2x their balance.

The price is now 50% lower but the market cap stays the same.

Unless it's someone's first days in crypto, I think it's pretty much the standard to assess coins based on mcap/FDV.

I'm convinced this is why so many normies like XRP.

They see it's at $2 while ETH is at 1.6k, and BTC is at 90k, and they think, "Oh, imagine if my XRP goes to those numbers."

They don't understand the concept of market cap.
