“Promise of future potential” is just another way of saying, carrot on a stick. 

It still depends on factors outside of the employees control. I say that knowing risk is involved in all of this, but I can see the same diluted shares playbook being used, where a promise is made up front, but that can still lead to several parties getting payouts before the employee does, if at all.
