Kansas City has a rich legacy of hybrid art—digital, analog, and everything between. I’m grateful to have learned from it, contributed to it, and watched it grow. We've been fusing tech and tradition for 60 years. 👇

1966: Sound, Light, Silence at the Nelson—immersive light and sound environments. 1970s–80s: Colette Bangert’s algorithmic plotter drawings—early generative systems in dialogue with traditional media. 1998: Michael Rees at H&R Block—digital modeling fused with sculpture. 1999–2008: Grand Arts + Kemper—installation and video from artists like Isaac Julien and Barry Anderson. 2011, 2014: Narrow Margins and NEW, FOUR at KCAI’s Artspace— I curated group exhibitions featuring sculpture, projection, and time-based media from new KCAI Faculty. 👇

2017: Dwight Frizzell in Casting Shadows at Artspace—interdisciplinary sound and media installation. 2018: Open Spaces—citywide festival curated by Dan Cameron. Nick Cave’s projection-mapped installation inside Corinthian Hall was a highlight. 2019: OccuAural at Agnes—open-format sound/video installation with Davin Watne, Barry Anderson, myself, and others. 2024: Influx at PLUG Gallery—we continued the sculptural/digital dialogue. This is just a slice of what’s unfolded here over six decades. KC’s hybrid timeline runs deep—and it’s still unfolding.
