My point is your parents would’ve been better off if they put that money they paid for it into the sp500.

I know the money goes back to pay current retirees.

Im not sure the system can work going forward. We have the baby boomers who will retire in huge numbers.

My point is simply if you took the required amount and put it into the S&P500 the lower income earners would be much better off.

Not going to say there aren’t problems with SS, yet I’ve always thought of it as a safety net for lower income earners.  

And less of social security as “my investments”.  

Would be happy to see cap raised further to increase the sustainability of it going forward.

Could have been managed much better though.

Why does it work fine in other developed countries?

How was it sabotaged? It works pretty much how it was originally designed.

Or maybe it's intentionally sabotaged after decades of curtailing to result in -4% return.

Because other countries are quite happy with their social security.

People fight for it to exist because they’ve been paying into it their whole lives. If the government wants to give me a lump sum of what I paid (with some interest) I’d call it even.
