This is the nuance I greatly appreciate. And I’m in agreement. 

I may even wait to hit the button I need until it’s done going in the wrong direction and everyone has exited.

Depends.

Even if you have the opportunity to step off while someone else is entering/exiting then you’ll still burn more energy.

If the elevator is packed then you can get off.

Otherwise stay because you’ll hold the elevator longer.

Now hypothetically, if you happened to walk onto an elevator going in the wrong direction do we step off or ride longer?

And make pointed eye contact with everyone while you wait
