If you had to assess if a founder is suitable for venture funding with one question, what would you ask? Assume founder market fit, and venture scale idea. Iโ€™m getting at the people side of it

who gets the most consolation if things don't work out? how would they define the failure where they gracefully keep things whole while repeatedly engaging high-risk, high-reward? sort of a new "where in 5 years" question.

The last bullet is because this demographic have more to prove. They are working hard against a system thatโ€™s not built for them but somehow figured out how to get in the same room as *you*. Itโ€™s not often where investors create a space where founders can be vulnerable and share stories that can touch all the above topics. Identifying people who can play the long game.

One question is hard. There are attributes I can list that my corner of the world looks for: - non-linear careers or โ€œportfolio careersโ€; focusing on collective skills acquired and ability to ramp/learn new things quickly, out of the box thinker, etc. Jamie Dimon is taking this approach now. - ability to fail; any experiences showcasing big risks and self-awareness around it, learnings to move forward - scrappy or showing gumption; no formal or elite degree, from underrepresented and/or lower socioeconomic backgrounds, immigrants, consulting exp, etc.

โ€œDo you have a life? Are you willing to give up everything to live and breathe your work for 10 years at least?โ€ I would never personally seek venture funding because I am too old to work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, for years at a stretch. Been there, done that. You need physical stamina and the willingness to put work first, *always*. And the chances are that you will still fail.

If your biggest competitor cloned your product tomorrow, how would you still win? Anytime I have asked this it has resulted in profoundly interesting answers from the greatest founders - and inversely less impressive from the mid ones. @eulerlagrange
