In a wild turn of events, I found out Wednesday that I’ll likely need open heart surgery to repair a congenital anomaly I didn’t know about until now. I’ve had phantom chest pains since childhood. It was always brushed off as gas or nothing serious by doctors until my first cardiologist, at 47, ordered a CT with contrast just to rule things out. Turns out one of my coronary arteries was built on the wrong side of my body and runs between two major vessels, the aorta and pulmonary artery. Basically, when my heart works hard, it gets pinched. It is rare, found in less than one percent of people, and considered high risk for sudden cardiac arrest during intense exertion. Maybe not exercising too intensely over the last 25 years saved my life. How’s that for irony? The good news is that I have no hard calcium blockages, and soft plaque is under 0.5 percent, which is a plus given this anomaly. But, really, I am still processing all of this. It's shocking to say the least. For now, everything that is not focused on healing is on pause. So I’ll be stepping away from socials for a while as part of my effort to prioritize health and recovery. I'll be back. In the mean time, stay diamond hearted! 💎❤️
