Super interesting… curious though, any reason the blacksmiths tended to be so literate?

Beyond physical labor, blacksmiths needed basic literacy to keep records, order materials, and handle practical math for measurements. So they sometimes took on random roles in communities (marriages, disputes, etc.) as one of the few literate people around rural towns.
