Something I think about a lot is the concept of affinity. In a nutshell, it's how much you "like" something. The more affinity you have towards a person/product/idea, the more you'll naturally support it. Building affinity is the key to long-term success, IMO. If your audience has a high affinity towards you, they'll stick around. Focusing on building affinity pushes you to do the right thing (guiding principle: emphasize with your audience), and it gives you leeway if you get it wrong (if you're building anything of value, you'll get some stuff wrong along the way). The beauty of affinity is that your audience not only trusts you to correct the mistakes you make, but they want you to succeed. And if you mess up, but course correct and get it right, you build even more affinity!
