Akabeko is a local toy from the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, a papier-mache doll in the shape of a red cow. In the Aizu dialect, "beko" means "cow," and the red color represents protection from evil, while the spots represent pox, and the doll is displayed as a charm to ward off disease.
