We misread the current zeitgeist as the good old sociopolitical pendulum swinging back from left to right. In reality, the pendulum grew a second arm, and is now exhibiting classic chaotic behavior. Dibs on the name “nonlinear politics”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_pendulum

Interesting — I wasn’t aware of the McKelvey–Schofield chaos theorem. The way it’s described sounds very similar to turbulent flow in dynamical systems, e.g. Navier-Stokes applied to fluid convection etc. The majority rule can be unstable and lead to unpredictable, aperiodic outcomes (which is characteristic of nonlinearity) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McKelvey%E2%80%93Schofield_chaos_theorem
