The models are going to get better. The tools are going to get better. Within a few years, anyone will be able to create a feature length movie if they have an idea. Will it be Hollywood level? Probably not. Does that matter? Probably not. Two other thoughts: 1. Quantity of creative internet video will increase by orders of magnitude. How do you find the interesting ones vs. low effort slop? 2. Would you rather watch average Netflix or Hollywood move (assume top 10% are affinity for the storyteller / actors and are actually good) or just expand on the universe of your favorite story. Endless Sicario sequels but if Villeneuve AI is director and Sheridan AI is the screenwriter?

You're overweighting Villeneuve and Sheridan for Sicario... it's everyone that made it + the zeitgeist + novelty of the story telling & production styling. And underweighting the magic that comes from Villeneuve and Sheridan + team getting a shot at the big time. If ZIRP has proven anything, 'endless' resource doesn't equal success. New creative teams + opportunity in the form of budget and marketing support does equal better shots at finding something magical. So the choke point is actually creative people finding other right creative people + the attention + opportunity to tell the story in the first place. To me that means a timeline is the best place for creatives to meet and wrangle enough attention for opportunity, ie filmmaking in the Farcaster timeline

I love all this new tech. It's already leading to a crazier internet where the fidelity of memes is going up. I also struggle to see it going long form in the way you describe. storytelling, in a way that's novel and hits the zeitgeist is eternally difficult. the ending is the hard part. wrote about this a while back. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2018/10/timehop-offers-me-the-thing-i-crave-most-online-an-ending.html

Hollywood is likely to be disrupted much like the newspaper industry was over the past 10–15 years. But we’ll also see the emergence of entirely new forms of media

1. Netflix et al try to shift (back) towards curators than creators but we see the rise of Siskel and Ebert-types disrupt this 2. Prob interested in non-canonical content. Brands/studios best served by not trying to fight this but find a way to peacefully co-exist like The Depsicables did (Knee jerk reactions not fully thought out)

This is either the renaissance of storytelling or the dawn of infinite sludge. Probably both

There is definitely a “quality” difference between lazy imagination prompting and someone who spread a creation across several models and editing pieces before the finished product, even if still lacking human copyright due to artistic “placeholder” filling. But if you remember how amazingly addicting simple lazy stick figure animation hack projects like Lazer Collection and ASDF Movie were? Flash games even? The mention of sky blue neggs and Meerca Chase bring anyone’s adrenaline up? It’s about the narrative, the story. It’s about the canvas you put the audience in while respecting their own creative imagination (how little or big their suspension of disbelief is) which in my opinion makes the human side still all the more important in what will make “not Hollywood but doesn’t matter” successes. Like the clear media generational line we got with YouTube and Justin Bieber’s emergence.

That last question’s deep tbvh, would you rather consume ‘great’ or co-create ‘meaningful’? Feels like the lines between audience and creator are vanishing. I the real question should be d‘Is it good?’ to ‘Is it for me?’
