New day, new story. I grew up in the DC suburbs which is a great place to be an angsty teen. I was a short metro ride into the city but also somehow still it felt like I had nothing to do and would just go hang out with a bunch of stoners and freaks and weirdos down at this fountain in front of the Alexandria courthouse. It was a super touristy area and we would just sit there and fuck with tourists and waste our lives away. I was a photographer and I ran a small punk label and zine so I was slightly more ambitious than some of my friends but mostly we were just there to pass the time and get into the kinda trouble angry suburban kids get into.

The first person I knew who died was my friend Red. I met him at the fountain like 95% of my social circle. Everyone had incredibly obvious nicknames back then and he was Red because he died his hair red. I hadn't known him very long when he had a bad acid trip and hanged himself, but we were becoming fast friends, and I was crushed. I remember trying not to cry at the funeral because I felt like I hadn't earned the sadness like his other friends. He had an open casket and he didn't look anything like himself. His parents died his hair back to brown. It was at one of those black southern baptist churches that I had only seen in movies and the pastor used his funeral to basically shame all his friends for being troubled teens. His little sister found him while he was still alive, but she was too small to save him. After the funeral she asked me if I was wearing red for her brother. Tears finally dripped out of me.
