I don't think I buy the idea that people saw the rich as aspiration figures basically ever. The best rich people have always been the ones that don't flaunt their wealth. The worst rich people have always been the ones that do.

Prosperity Gospel has been a core part of American values since the 1950s. It really bloomed in the Reagan era and had a second wind under Clinton. The Southern baptist culture Clinton came from has a lot of morals around work and success.
