Four things immediately spring to mind here...

1) China supplies over double the amount of energy USA does globally - so expressing as a % is a weaker expression than a total amount here

2) USA produces and exports the  most amount of natural gas globally (almost 25%)

3) My home, Australia, is looking at IMPORTING natural gas for domestic use, as it is apparently more economically beneficial to export than use what we generate ourselves 

4) NYT is poop 💩
