Interesting research from Florencia Torche @ Princeton: > New paper: Wives with more education than husband are *more* likely to take his name than education-equal marriages. > As women outpace men in education & increasingly keep their names, name-taking provides symbolic way to compensate for her status superiority https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0276562425000514?dgcid=author https://bsky.app/profile/ftorche.bsky.social/post/3lqadbob5l227

I would keep my last name for all those reasons. I also don’t want to lose my heritage. It’s uniquely tied to it. I do appreciate the Spanish who honor both the mother and father by taking both surnames. I have girlfriends who name their daughters after them. They are the second and/or the third. If men can do it, why not women? Also if divorced and the woman has custody, they give the children the mother’s maiden name. It’s only fair.
