A lot crypto people seem to think being first to build something entitles you to collect rent from everyone else who comes later. People are only willing to pay rent if it gives access to attention / distribution / potential revenue.

I don’t feel entitled to rent but it does hurt when someone copies you explicitly without credit or permission

You are unfortunately correct but I do think there has to be some sort of sense of ethics beyond winning or the world will fall into socialism and states become the only winners https://farcaster.xyz/mattlee/0x150559dd

Would agree with this. Business is business, but if every time a small innovator loses out on the upside of their work because someone with more people, funding, and knowledge of how the legal process works comes along and takes all the upside, it kills the incentives to innovate. If the answer to this is simply "get gud," then no first-time innovator should ever work on anything ever again. Just because you know how to code something into existence (not that I do) doesn't mean you magically have a thorough understanding of how corporate structure and patents work, nor does it mean you have funding to afford to pay all the people who do.
