I've recently been surprised to discover that a few of my friends are choosing to use nicotine to help them with focus, even though they are not ex-smokers.

I decided to look into it, and it turns out that there are documented health benefits of nicotine for some people. 🧵

It's interesting to see what is allowed and not allowed in different sectors.

The most beneficial thing I learned from our aviation guys is risk reduction with lean six sigma techniques.

In anything else 1% error is great but not in aviation...

It’s unthinkable in commercial air transport where pilots are accountable not just for their aircraft but also hundreds of lives at the back — being on stimulants would get them grounded.

But I guess it can be a thing in the air force because mil pilots may be called upon to do multiple sorties at odd hours, and the mission trumps everything

I feel like adderall etc is more like the limitless drug 😄

These days I get what I need from caffeine, properly scheduled. Sleep is good, and I've found you still accumulate sleep debt with modafinil. I've also found that amphetamines like adderall etc are great in the moment, but suck long term.

It doesn't have a negative health effect until 30+ hours of no sleep or something like that. It will keep you up no matter what.

After being prescribed it I read about it being basically the drug "limitless" is about.

Modafinil doesn't really improve focus. It gives a consistent feeling of wakefulness. Basically, the chemical your brain produces that wakes you up when you have to pee gets some extra production.

I haven't used any for like 20 years, but it's neat for what it is. Keeps you awake without any jitters or buzz etc.
