Fun fact: there’s a nearly identical alternative to Base that isn’t affiliated with military parades and cynical political quid pro quo. Incidentally, it’s called Optimism, and, its technology stack is what Base is built using. There’s a DAO, a token, and everything; even Farcaster is built on Optimism. 

I think I’ll start using it more again. NFA.

Also a fun fact: a16z (Andreessen) heavily invested in Optimism and supported Trump’s campaign.

Very good point- that said, I still have concerns that protocols can be abused and effectively turned into slush funds that are light on regulation. BitDAO is a noteworthy example.

I’m not optimistic on our ability to identify corruption. I’m aware that Optimism funds mechanisms intended to identify conflicts of interest, but the protocol is inherently vulnerable. I’m inclined to lean on a metaphor here: you can build a wall around a city, but you’ll never patch every rathole.

All good points. Thanks for bringing them up. Optimism has done a lot of experimenting with making DAOs less plutocratic so I’m (no pun intended), Optimistic they are trying to buck that trend, but you’re right about the influence of capital investment and the design of governance still being imperfect.
