I built tooling for "using" NFTs cross-chain. it leverages EIP-3668 and trusted ownership proofs. compared to x-chain messaging its cheaper and faster (no L1 tx) and is more generic than x-chain storage proofs as it depends on the 721 spec and not specific storage layout

Really depends on the use case, people are going for LayerZero, Connext, Axelar these days in an aggregated way like Beefy Fi.

We too are building something interesting that allows you to use native bridges along with other mechanisms.
