Thread: This week at Dark Markets, we took a little swerve into one of the most punishing of all marketplaces: jobs. As a writer on the verge of the extremely rare professional milestone of publishing a major book, I thought it was important to share my rather winding, improvisational path to the top of my field. The past decade-plus has seen young people targeted with “grindset” and “hustle culture” content that tells them they must get rich as fast as possible – and cut corners at every opportunity. But of course, this is all a grift – the influencers are selling a seductive lie, not a real strategy. Grindset can’t create actual success, because shortcuts also leave you short on the skills, knowledge, and purpose it takes to thrive long-term. https://davidzmorris.substack.com/p/the-long-road-imagining-a-slow-career

It’s no coincidence grindset culture is deeply tied to the far right, through figures like Andrew Tate – an entire political ideology structured around extraction and zero-sum games rather than creation and building. The reality of success is way, way more complicated. I started my journey in academia, and the skills I gained from earning a PhD still inform my work every single day – but I decided the university research system wasn’t going to be the right place for me to do the kind of work I was aiming towards. https://davidzmorris.substack.com/p/the-long-road-imagining-a-slow-career

Transitioning into journalism and industry required more sacrifices, and I’m hitting some milestones later than many peers. But I also now have an extremely rare combination of skills that have meant not having to “apply for a job” in more than a decade. I’m treated as a peer by people I admire greatly, and have something close to carte blanche to pursue whatever I want. That’s not a place you can get by dropping out of college to do drop-shipping full time. If you’re curious for a detailed rundown of my own weird career, and tips on how to envision your own slow burn, read on: https://davidzmorris.substack.com/p/the-long-road-imagining-a-slow-career
