Finally got around to booting up my new Mac Mini.

First thing I did was figure out how to install Nix, nix-darwin and pkgs.code-cursor from nixpkgs.

Now I have my Nix Flake file opened up in Cursor and I’m asking Claude how to set up all the apps and build tools and IDEs I need so I never have to manually download anything ever again.

So you know how when you set up a new computer, you have to hunt for all the apps and software you want by clicking dozens of buttons in the App Store, downloading things from a bajillion websites, and tweaking all the settings?

A bunch of smart cookies created software like Homebrew and Nix to help automate all of those steps in a consistent and replicable way. Developers and system admins absolutely love it and I absolutely see why.

Pro tips for all the aspiring software engineers like me: learn to measure and profile what you build.

At some point, there is no right way to engineer a server, service or system. You can only solve the tradeoffs/dilemmas and choose the right tools if you have statistical insight into your needs.

e.g knowing your read/write ratio to chose the right concurrent synchronization mechanism, changing your UI/UX to optimize experiences in consumer apps
