What kind of oracle mechanisms would be needed to verify external conditions for these smart contracts? That seems like a key challenge.

The one I have been thinking about would be based on attestations, and would be a contextual score (just like Cura has different scores for people on different channels).

What metrics would go into a reputation score? Successful smart contract execution, positive community feedback, lack of exploits? And who would curate or validate these metrics?

For sure, yes, for some of them. 

Without a legal system to enforce good behavior, you often either need a stand-in (some group, AI, third party), or you need a good and valuable reputation system  

If you want to try to find solutions on this level, great!

But you can also just dream a little and think about what kind of functionality it would be beneficial to have.
