Are there any web3 streaming apps that are any good? Seems like a perfect use case. Fill up a wallet with X stablecoin tokens and they get automatically micropaid out per stream.

Of course the problem is backcatalog/labels demanding huge cuts. But surely there could be a better SoundCloud?

I like catalog.works but they don't pay per stream. You collect each song or album via debit, credit, usdc, or paypal. I believe artists set the price

I’m a crypto noob but I really don’t get this obsession with collection. To normies it will always feel gimmicky at best. It needs to have obvious value. And honestly, if it was going to take off in a serious mainstream way, it would have done so during the NFT boom. 

Tipping/micropayments/programmable IP seem to have a lot more mainstream potential to me than creator coins and most NFTs

Hm, that’s true. And especially true for music — band t-shirts and original press vinyl etc. so maybe for the hardcore music fan that really would leave Spotify over ethics that’s the right fit. But really, I think you’re competing with Bandcamp then, not the major streamers.

I do think the stable coin pay-per-view model has the potential to really get big with podcasting. Platforms are already low-friction and so there are so many pod episodes that require paywalled subscriptions or embedded ads even with spotify/apple/whatever premium. Being able to pay $1 for a single episode is just better UX and creators would earn more

I feel the same way. I see collecting music as a way of tipping the artist. But I also really like the idea of provenance. It would be cool to look back in 5 or 10 years and prove that you were one of the first people to support an artist before they blew up. There’s a lot you can build around that provenance when it comes to fandom
