Deep diving into memory for a paper I'm writing. Interesting to see how the foundational literature defines memory as a process of encoding and retrieving information, all within an individual. Yet it's immediately obvious that this definition has never really made sense. Living systems have stored memory across networks for generations. Information technology now means that our memories are increasingly externalised. Then you start thinking about AI. Clearly memory was never individual, but always distributed.
