Already happening. Apple assembles the Mac Pro in Texas. System76 assembles its systems in Denver. There other vendors doing the same. The challenge (outside of cost) is the lack of basic skills in the areas you want to open a factory. Hard to have skilled manufacturing jobs at scale when the basic literacy rate is < 40%.

The world is full of imperfect things that work simply because they are "good enough".

I've eaten at Tony P's Dockside Grill and the Marina CPK since I came to LA 25 years ago. Both closed in the last month. Just found out yesterday that Holy Cow BBQ in Culver City also closed. Not sure if this is just churn or the sign of the direction that the LA economy is heading in?

Not had a chance to check Noun out yet (I don’t go to that end of Glencoe very often), but IMHO Breakfast Bowls and Overnight Oats are good options to have. Zinque in Venice used to do a good bowl, but they’ve changed the recipe recently. I can’t recall anywhere in LA that does really good Overnight Oats.

The biggest challenge for Crypto remains UX. Even in 2025 moving value around is painful, made worse by the proliferation of networks and coins. Consolidation around a handful of coins is the most likely outcome but getting there will be painful.

Back at the grindstone for the first time in a couple of weeks. One hour to apply all the work laptop software updates, another hour to update all the node dependencies for the projects I'm working on and fix any breakages. Welcome to software development in 2025.

London always seems caught between future and past. 15 minutes ago is next to 500 years ago, with the next 15 minutes always being built.

While the UK has embraced coffee culture for a while now, I never get the sense that (outside of the more artisan places) it actually understands it.

Also AS/400s are stupidly rock solid. I crashed one early into my career when running the JVM and two support people came onsite to debug the issue and make sure that we had the right communication of OS patches installed. Banks love that level of support.

The true horror of the world is that the banking system is still underpinned by systems that ftp CSV text files between each other. If you are really lucky they use sftp and `gpg` the text file.

Beautiful Soup is hands down the Python library I use the most. It's great for post processing files to fix up URLs and other lint that you can't easily process via other tools.

Which areas in Los Angeles are growing at the moment? I was at 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica yesterday and was sad to see how it's declined. Lots of empty storefronts on the promenade and surrounding streets. Seems to be a common issue all across Los Angeles and associated cities. Not a good look for a city hosting a World Cup and the Olympics over the next few years.

LACMA, The LaBrea Tar Pits, and the new Oscars museum are the main attractions. There are also some great art deco buildings along Wilshire. There used to be a decent Irish pub on Fairfax. Not sure if it’s still there. Once the new subway opens I’d expect to see the area change a lot.

The key for any long lived Javascript project is to minimize the number of dependencies. Otherwise you end up spending entire afternoons upgrading and resolving test breakages when the dependency update breaks things in strange and wonderful ways.
