to me a more apparent way to ascertain spiritual maturity is a 2x2 based on 1) unconditional thriving and 2) expressions of metta / loving kindness / goodwill

i was also trying to come up with the least judgmental labels 😅  i think you'll get what i'm going for and why...

with these 2 you can observe a person based on the way they act, rather than having to trust anything they are saying or their self-assessment

a tibetan buddhist guideline is observing a spiritual teacher for 10 years before accepting them as your guru and i agree with this timeline requirement as a minimum

paradox

my fear is that unconditionality is a slippery thing (until it's not?)

like, is mind conditional or not? if it is conditional, you won't be experiencing unconditionality. isn't that a property of the process of mind?

it feels like you won't ever know that you're in unconditional (internal/external) because you'd be merged with it? does that make sense?

definitely starting with 1) inward/conditional but i guess that there are people who follow what you said, and also people who go from 1) inward/conditional to 3) inward/unconditional then migrate to 4) outward/unconditional

the "catch"/paradox to me is that if one is *truly* unconditionally thriving then...why not be compassionate?
of course some would also argue the opposite, if one is truly unconditional...then why be compassionate?

my observation from teachers i trust is that compassion "happens" as natural result of unconditional thriving without having to force anything tho
