I greatly appreciate the direction vitalik wants to take things, but given the timeframe it took to get just the consensus layer swapped out, I do question whether their plan to do this all in five years will be achieved. Not saying it's impossible — I've built a lot of the things that they _plan_ on adding during the past three years of Q. But migrating an existing protocol vs something net new is a significantly larger complexity overhead: it deprecates purpose-built hardware, either breaks some existing applications or has to build a hell of a kludge to keep it compatible, and definitely has cascading side effects for external protocols that interface with it all.
