I donโ€™t know (not an IP lawyer) maybe @codeofcrypto knows if CC0 is reversible but I dought it is

@dberg and @campick are both into IP โ€” so they would have better perspectives on this topic. Could also be a good prompt for /law-policy to see who else might have insights on whether CC0 is reversible.

Who is revoking their Creative Commons license? Yuga? Unlike patents, copyrights, and trademarks which are rights against all parties, a CC0 is governed by contract law which is limited to the two parties in a contract.

So even if itโ€™s irrevocable once a party starts using their IP, they can revoke it at any time against parties who havenโ€™t started to use their characters or code and thus havenโ€™t entered into a contractual relationship with them.

But Iโ€™m not sure thatโ€™s whatโ€™s happening here. My guess is Yuga labs will maintain their CC0 but they can still monetize their IP without preventing others from using it and trying to monetize it in their ways.

Also just because Bored Apes are under a CC0 license, doesnโ€™t mean all assets they acquire are. For example, I donโ€™t think Cryptopunks have a CC0 which Yuga acquired earlier. So they could enforce IP rights on IP they acquire that isnโ€™t under this license.
