Trump admin just revoked student visas for all 7000 foreign Harvard students bc the school has “accepted boatloads of cash from foreign donors” If this had happened in 2010 we would’ve deported John Collison of Stripe fame https://apnews.com/article/harvard-trump-foreign-student-457d07268fba9c1f6f7f32fe0424bc3b

I mean one side has broadly been responsible for generating billions of dollars in economic value as well as countless crucial scientific discoveries and cultural artifacts while the other side is wielding deportation like a club to make every institution that disagrees with them bend the knee I got my own beef with Harvard, but they broadly deliver on their societal promises

generating billions opposed to who? i don't really get that argument.. and i'm not saying either side is right, just literally that both sides appear ridiculous-- celebrating student who was charged with beating up a jew, ignoring the government requests, training ccp who participated in genocide, cancelling all students foreign student visas--- these all sound pretty ridiculous

Honestly, I think it’s crazy to think that the “solution” to individual academic programs and departments that are full of weirdos by design (bc that’s how you get novel academic work) actually acting like weirdos is for the federal government to decide how they’re supposed to act Colleges saying fuck you government is good actually. It’s the only way we have enough stochastic interpersonal energy to discover new things. Do I personally disagree with many of the Harvard group decisions? Yea, but do I also think that the guy who reinvents laser physics in his spare time probably also organizes weirdo communist social events? Also yea. If colleges are explicitly pro-government, then you have already lost the raw material to change the world. You need the counterculture energy to do that.

every college has weird communist social events though, i don't really care about that i feel like this was trying to target more sinister stuff like hate crimes (based only on the articles, i am not invested in this topic)-- i also feel like the counter to bending to the government is looking at it like the US funding rocket research for soviet russia at a point in time when that wasn't okay, or the soviets funding US based research teams when it wasn't appropriate. i mean... hmm it's tough when modern warfare between major players is done at least in part mimetically... anyway... i don't think this decision addresses that in any meaningful way and i don't agree with the decision / feel bad for those students... at the same time i don't think it's any more my job to fight for harvard than harvard's job to fight for america. though generally speaking the foundation of america is built on the ability to come here seems as overtly targeted as any i.e. patriot act crime, to make an example.
