Crypto started as a movement to break free from government and institutional control - a financial system built on autonomy, privacy and decentralization. Now governments are buying and holding crypto. On one hand, that signals belief - a firm recognition that crypto isn’t going away. But on the other hand, it’s deeply ironic. The same institutions crypto was designed to replace are slowly becoming key players within it. If we keep moving in this direction for long enough, we risk recreating the very system crypto was built to escape - one where control, regulation and surveillance outweigh freedom and trustlessness. Mass adoption is great but not at the cost of the original vision. If crypto becomes just another tool of the state, then all we’ve done is rebrand fiat.
